Sommerhaus PIU | Patrick Frey & Björn Götte
Sommerhaus PIU is a modern prefab vacation home by industrial designer Patrick Frey and architect Björn Götte. Inspired by the Scandinavian summerhouse culture, they created a casual, timeless design that would fit into a variety of landscapes, whether coastal, alpine or pastoral.
Sommerhaus PIU (from the Italian for “more”) has a clean-lined design that provides a comfortable living space without any excess. The shallow-pitched shed roof transitions into a trellis as it projects over the wrap-around deck, creating a nice play of sunlight and shadow on the larch façades. The version shown here has a simple rectangular floor plan of 65 m2 (700 ft2) containing two bedrooms. Smaller and larger models are also available.
The kitchen and bathroom form a service core in the center of the home, separating the living/dining room from the bedrooms. The arrangement leaves the kitchen separate from but still somewhat open to the dining area. The living space is light and airy with full-height windows and sliding doors opening to the deck.

The kitchen doubles as the hallway to one of the bedrooms, while the other bedroom and the bathroom are reached by a short hallway on the opposite side of the house. That hallway also serves as the home’s main entry. Although the bathroom is in the center of the house, it receives natural daylight through an internal window that the designers thoughtfully placed near the ceiling over the kitchen shelves.
Despite having “sommerhaus” in its name, the cottage is well-insulated and could easily be used year-round. We’re not sure if there’s a washer and dryer, but a combination machine could certainly go in the bathroom. With that addition, it would make a great home for a young family or a retired couple.
